Week 8 Discussion

The “Work of Waiting” written by Kwon describes and gives the readers an insight to the Chinese Korean workers who were able to migrate into Korea, as well as the family who were left behind. The immigration policies set a limit to the amount of individuals who are able to migrate into Korea, and this enabled only some individuals to immigrate to Korea from China, which during this time, was facing economical reform. Due to the limitations, however, there was no guarantee that a whole family would be able to immigrate to Korea. Therefore, people who were not able to immigrate, and they would be separated from the ones they love. This put them in great emotional stress, as they were physically not able to be together with the people they love, only being able to send remittances as a reassurance of love and their feelings.
